Robert John Downey Jr. (born April 4, 1965) is an American actor best known for his performances in films such as Less Than Zero (a performance poked fun at by Michael J. Nelson in his book "Mind Over Matters"), Weird Science, Chaplin, and Tropic Thunder (the latter two of which earned him Academy Award nominations).
Downey had a long, public struggle with drug addition that pervaded the popular consciousness. This was referenced on Mystery Science Theater 3000 in Experiment 902 The Phantom Planet when Tom Servo noted that one of the spaceships looks like a drug that might be getting delivered to Downey.
Later in his career, Downey enjoyed great success in the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man in the popular film series based on the Marvel Comics superheroes.
